Tehran as an important and symbolic
representative of the higher education of the country, now is in a
poor physical condition. The ever increasing density of the students
and the activities has led the university authorities to move some
of the faculties and the research canters to the off campus
locations. Even though, the per student area is still as low as high
school levels and far below the standard limits in some faculties.
In addition to some of the departments in the main campus such as
the central library, the auditoriums, the restaurant, the mosque,
the biochemistry and biophysics research centers provide services to
the off campus students, too.
In order to
improve the existing situation there is an urgent need to expand
some of the departments and faculties (Figure 2) in a larger area to
prevent further loss of educational and research qualities. In
general the need for the development of the university of Tehran
may be summarized as:
Lack of the required area has limited the university to upgrade the
quality of education in some faculties (Figure 3 & Table 2). If
these shortages extend longer, students may not the trained
according to the acceptable standards.
Lack of the required area has prevented the university to provide
enough ground to set up the new equipment and the required research
departments (Figure 3).
The environmental parameters in and around the university are
deteriorating. There is an urgent need to deal with the air
pollution, water pollution, waste management, traffic problem,
shortage of the green area, parking problem and so on.
The cultural parameters in and around the university are to be
addressed. The University of
Tehran as a unique cultural center with honorable history is
expected to play an important role in upgrading the cultural
activities in the capital.
There is an increasing need to expand the sport fields for the
students and the academic staff.
Increasing the role of women as student and staff needs more secure
environment. Therefore, to meet the increasing demand from the
female population for further participation in the education and
research, a more secure environment is required.
